What is the SSC CHSL Typing Test?
The Typing test is qualifying in nature — it is not counted in the merit list. But you MUST clear it to get the final posting.
SSC CHSL Typing Speed Requirements
- — DEO (English): Minimum 8,000 Key Depressions per Hour (KDPH) — equivalent to ~35 WPM
- — JSA/LDC (English): Minimum 35 WPM in English
- — JSA/LDC (Hindi): Minimum 30 WPM in Hindi (Mangal font on Unicode)
- — The test duration is 10–15 minutes depending on the post
- — Both Gross Speed and Net Speed are measured; errors are penalised
Error Calculation Rules — How SSC Counts Mistakes
- — Spelling errors: Each full mistake = 10 key depressions deducted
- — Backspace usage: Using backspace is NOT penalised directly but corrected words are still checked for accuracy
- — Omission/Addition of words: Each omitted or extra word counts as an error
- — Word count method: SSC calculates speed as (Total Key Depressions ÷ Duration) × 60
- — Net Speed = Gross Speed – (Errors × Penalty Factor)
Many candidates confuse Gross Speed with Net Speed. Even if you type fast, high errors can disqualify you. Practice with error tracking enabled.
Pro Tips to Crack SSC CHSL Typing Test
- — 🎯 Practice on the official TCS-like interface — TypingSeekho mirrors it exactly
- — ⌨️ For Hindi posts, master Mangal (Inscript layout) — not Krutidev, which is now phased out
- — ⏱️ Practice 10-minute timed tests daily — start from 20 WPM and incrementally push to 40+ WPM
- — 📝 Focus on common Passage types: government circulars, official letters — familiar vocabulary improves speed
- — 🔄 Do not stop to correct errors mid-sentence — it breaks your rhythm; let minor typos go and move forward
- — 💪 Warm up your fingers for 5 minutes before the actual test
- — 👀 Practice "touch typing" — eyes on screen, NOT the keyboard
- — 📐 Focus on accuracy first (95%+), then work on speed — a fast typist with 85% accuracy will fail
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- — Selecting the wrong language in the exam interface (English vs Hindi)
- — Not practicing with the correct font — Mangal Unicode for Hindi posts
- — Typing too fast without accuracy control — errors multiply
- — Ignoring punctuation marks — commas and full stops are part of the speed calculation
- — Not reading the passage before typing — spend 30 seconds skimming before starting
Recommended Daily Practice Schedule
- — Week 1: Focus on keyboard layout mastery — 15 min/day touch-typing drills
- — Week 2: Start full passages — 10 min tests daily, aim for 25+ WPM
- — Week 3: Speed boost sessions — target 35 WPM, reduce error rate below 5%
- — Week 4: Full mock tests on exam-pattern interface — simulate real exam conditions
